v1.5 Instructions for accessing #spite chat using mIRC for Windows 95/98 These are the in depth, step by step instructions for getting into the #spite chat room using the mIRC chat client for windows9x. It may seem a little long, but you only have to do this once. 1. Go to http://www.mirc.co.uk and download the current version. Make sure you save the file to a directory you can remember. 2. Once it is finished downloading, go to your Start menu and choose the Run option. 3. In the Run window, hit the browse button, and locate the mirc file you just saved. Once you have it selected, hit the Open button. Now you should be back at the Run window with the path and file name in the box. Now you can hit the Ok button. 4. Now the first mIRC install window comes up. Click through to continue, and choose 'yes' on the license agreement. Here you can change the installation directory, back up an older version of mIRC, and choose whether to install icons for mIRC on the start menu. For 99% of users, everything on this page is fine. Hit the install button without changing anything. 5. Now you will see the the status bar telling you the % of install completed. On most systems this will be installed in under a minute. Then a new window will pop up telling you the install has succeded. Hit the okay button on this window. you may also have a little window listing the shortcuts to the mIRC items. Hit the X/Close button to close this window. 6. Go to the Start menu, choose Programs, under that choose mIRC, and under that choose mIRC32. This should start mIRC. 7. Now mIRC starts up, and on top of it a nag window may pop up. Declick the check box on the bottom left corner of the nag window, then hit the X/Close button to close the nag window. 8. The mIRC Options window now pops up, automatically set on the connect option. Here you will have to set up several items. Choose the Add button at the top of the setup window. In the Description box type: fdfnet 1. In the IRC server box type: burghcom.fdfnet.net Again, you can leave everything else here alone and hit the Add button. Repeat this step with the following information: In the description box: fdfnet 2. In the IRC server box: tower.fdfnet.net Hit the add button once again. Now you should be back at the mIRC options window with the connect option highlighted Fill in the other blanks here as instructed below. a. Full Name: Put whatever you want here, but don't leave any of these items blank. b. Email address: Don't put your real email address here if you don't want it visible to everyone. But you WILL need to put something in here. c. Nickname: This is the name everyone will see you as, so choose accordingly. Note that common nicknames are usually already registered to someone else on the server, so you may wish to choose something distinctive, yet not overly long or annoying. d. Alternative: This is the name everyone will see you as if someone with your first nickname is already on the server. e. Invisible: Check this option. This doesn't make you truly invisible to other users, but it will stop people from other channels from being able to scan the channel you're in and come up with your nickname. 9. Now switch to the Identd option under connect in the left window pane by left clicking on it. Check the 'Enable ident server' box, as some servers will refuse your connection without it checked. Enter anything in the User Id window, just don't leave it blank. All the other options here are okay. You can now click the OK button. 10. Now it's time to choose the server to connect to. You can get to this option at any time by clicking on the little Options icon just to the right of the lightning bolt in the icon menu, or you can choose the File menu, and Options under that. 11. Left click on the Connect option in the left pane of the window. Open the server listbox, and choose fdfnet 1, which will probably be near the bottom of the list. Now hit the Connect to IRC server! button. 12. If you have connected successfully, you will see text scrolling by in the Status window, and you will get a 'mIRC Channels Foler' window that pops up. Remove the check mark from the option labeled 'Pop up folder on connect' at the bottom of this window, and click its Close button. 13. Now you should be at the Status window. Click in the text input area at the bottom of the Status window so that you have a little flashing cursor there. At that, type: /join #spite 14. After this, all you will have to do is open up mIRC and hit the little lightning bolt icon to connect with the same settings as your last session. If you find that you can't get onto the server, or you wish to change your options, you can go back into the setup window, and choose the IRC Servers tab and choose the fdfnet 2 server. Now connect as usual. If you still cannot connect, the net may be having problems, so try again after an hour or two. This document created by Sunder.
